Any time a novel is turned into a play certain story lines have to be dropped. “When you have the creator of the whole world, it behooves us to tap into that resource and it makes production that much sharper and that much richer.”Īs with “Plainsong,” Schmiedl has the actors step aside and give small bits of narration from the book. He was also happy to have the author on hand to provide his input. ![]() “I see my job as making dramatic what`s happening in the novel - not to make my own personal statement about that novel,” he said. But, he said, Haruf was very open to exploring the work.Ī lot of directors and playwrights are unapologetic about having their “own interpretation” and see it as their own separate work (some won`t allow writers on set to keep them from pulling actors in different directions). “Theater is all about collaboration,” said the playwright, Eric Schmiedl, which makes it very different from the solitary work of a novelist. ![]()
